May I refer to Waas' letter of 10th November IM/22/165/02 (42)
about the Chinese Claims.
There is one point which we should like to get lear before roceed to settle with the Kowloon rogerty owners.
You may remember that beside the claims amounting to H 2,450,000 which represented rents, damage to buildings and electricity charges there was damage estimated at HK. 3,750,000 in respect of furniture damaged or removed by the Chinese troo se I don't think you have previously seen a copy of the note from the Unbassy, Nanking to the Chinese Minister of Foreign Affairs which, whilst prethe claim for H.. $ 2,450,000, waived, in the name of the Hong Kong Government, the furniture claim. We are unable to say on what grounds this decision was made but we should like to be assured that it means that no liability for the furniture losses rests
with the War Office. The point was made in may's letter of 25th (6
February last to Scarlett (copied to Moɛwing).
I am sending copies of this letter to Coates and
